Terms
Terms andconditions.
What these terms cover
These terms apply to your use of this website and, unless a written agreement between us says otherwise, to any survey processing we carry out for you using SAAF. "We" and "us" mean IIDA Labs. "You" means the person or organisation using the site or engaging the service. A signed agreement for a specific engagement takes precedence over these terms where the two differ.
What the service does
SAAF processes aerial imagery of shores, creeks, riverbanks and water surfaces to detect items of waste within six classes (glass, plastic bottles, tin and aluminium cans, takeaway cups, retort pouches and food containers), to classify them, and to report a count, a footprint area and an estimated mass per class and for the survey as a whole, together with annotated frames. Where surveys of the same stretch are flown at different tides or in different seasons, it also compares them.
It is a measurement instrument. It does not remove litter, direct operations on the ground, or fly drones for you unless a separate agreement says so.
Counts, areas and estimated mass
You should understand what the outputs are and are not before relying on them.
- Counts are the model's detections. Detection accuracy is high but not perfect; some items are missed and some are misclassified. Anything outside the six classes is not counted.
- Areas are computed from detection boxes scaled by the ground sample distance, which depends on the camera details and flight altitude you provide. An incorrect altitude scales every area in proportion.
- Mass is an estimate. It is derived from box dimensions and published reference weights for each class. It is not a weighing and should not be presented as one. Partially buried or submerged items are under-measured.
Outputs are provided as evidence to inform decisions, not as certified measurements. Where a decision has legal, regulatory or financial consequences you should verify the figures independently.
What you are responsible for
- Lawful flying. You are responsible for complying with all drone, aviation, privacy and land-access laws that apply where you fly, including permissions, altitude limits and no-fly zones. We do not verify this.
- Accurate flight details. The camera model, focal length and altitude you provide are used to scale every measurement. You are responsible for their accuracy.
- Rights in imagery. You confirm that you have the right to send us the imagery and that doing so does not infringe anyone else's rights.
- Use of results. You are responsible for how you present and act on the results, including describing mass as an estimate where you publish it.
Imagery, results and intellectual property
- Your imagery remains yours. You grant us a licence to store and process it to deliver your results and, unless you opt out, to improve the detection model as described in the privacy policy.
- Your results (annotated frames, tables and totals produced for you) are yours to use, publish and share. We ask that SAAF is credited as the method where results are published, and that estimated mass is described as an estimate.
- The service, including the detection model, software, methods, reference data and this website's design and content, remains the property of IIDA Labs. Nothing in these terms transfers it to you.
Use of this website
You may browse this site and use the contact form for its intended purpose. You may not scrape it at scale, attempt to interfere with its operation, or use the contact form to send unsolicited commercial messages. The site's content may be quoted with attribution; the imagery on it may not be reused without permission.
No warranty
The website and the service are provided "as is". Beyond what is written in a signed agreement, we make no warranty that the outputs will be error-free, complete, or fit for a particular purpose, or that the website will be available without interruption. Accuracy figures we publish describe measured performance on test imagery and are not a guarantee of performance on yours.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, IIDA Labs is not liable for indirect, consequential or special losses, loss of profit, or losses arising from decisions taken on the basis of the outputs. For any engagement, our total liability is limited to the fees you paid us for that engagement. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence or for fraud.
Engagements and ending them
An engagement begins when we confirm in writing that we will process a survey for you and ends when the agreed results are delivered, unless a written agreement provides for an ongoing arrangement. Either party may end an ongoing arrangement on 30 days' written notice. On ending, we deliver any results already produced and, on request, delete your imagery as described in the privacy policy.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India, and the courts of India have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them, unless a signed agreement between us specifies otherwise. Before any formal step, we ask that you raise the matter with us at saaf@iidalabs.org so we can try to resolve it directly.
Changes
We may update these terms as the service develops. The effective date at the top shows the current version. Changes do not apply retroactively to an engagement already confirmed in writing unless you agree to them.
